Reporter Christina McDermott visited the farm with Shelby Wild of Route One Farmers Market to interview us for “The Hands ― and the Truck ― That Feed Lompoc,” published July 13, about food insecurity in Lompoc and the local food system that is feeding Lompoc by connecting small farms like ours to families that need it, particularly those using SNAP benefits.
The piece follows Route One Farmers’ Market‘s mobile truck, which buys produce from local farms and delivers it to food pantries while accepting SNAP benefits. Wild and Lompoc Food Pantry‘s Monique Luna spoke about the growing need. The pantry now serves around 300 families a week, many of them seniors on fixed incomes.
We talked about what farming looks like from our end. Jeremy and I started this in 2009, caring for his grandfather and a few chickens and quail. It’s grown into vegetables, eggs, honey, a CSA, and a farm stand where we also sell what our neighbors grow. Programs like Farms Together matter because they provide a stable market, and pay retail prices, allowing farms like ours to plan ahead, grow, and reinvest in programs for our community.
